I joined Masterclass in 2016 and I've spent a large number of hours taking its courses. In this 2022 review, I share my thoughts relating to this online learning platform for creative professionals.

I completed over twelve of the Masterclass courses in the last few years by teachers like Steve Martin, Malcolm Gladwell and James Patterson.

What is MasterClass?

Founded in 2015 (originally as Yanka Industries, Inc.) by Stanford student, David Rogier, MasterClass launched its website these May with only three instructors. Twelve classes were later added in 2017 before the full total drastically jumped to 50 by 2018.

MasterClass classes are taught by respected and renowned experts and celebrity instructors in a series of high-quality video lessons, typically with a supplemental workbook that may easily be downloaded and printed for further reference.

Every course contains between 2 to 4 hours of video divided in to single class lessons which are approximately 10 to 15 minutes long.

In 2021, MasterClass rolled out a new learning feature called Sessions by MasterClass. Previously, if students wished to expand their amount of knowledge or wish to ask questions, each class had its own individual online portal called “The Hub” where students could talk with other students and MasterClass moderators. 

Sessions is really a new “hands-on” format where students learn in a structured curriculum alongside each other within 30 days. Each session includes dedicated and trained Teaching Assistants that are available to simply help answer questions and provide feedback.

Who is MasterClass for?

MasterClass will work for lifelong learners who want to absorb educational material in a variety of subjects from a range of experts. It's also beneficial to those in a specific field, like business or the creative arts, seeking to enhance their skills and get practical tips about a certain topic.

How does MasterClass work? 

MasterClass classes are about 2-5 hours normally, with individual lessons ranging from 2-5 minutes. Classes include pre-recorded video lessons by your instructor, a class workbook, interactive assignments, and sometimes community activities. MasterClass may have opportunities for students to submit work to instructors for feedback, but that's not the norm.

Yes, I believe MasterClass is worth every penny for the majority of individuals who are eager to learn more and enjoy bettering themselves through knowledge.
